About MILK + BOOKIES: Milk + Bookies is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in the United States. The organization’s stated mission is two-fold: 1) providing opportunities for children to experience giving back to their community and 2) literacy promotion in underserved areas of the population. While book donations are an integral element of the Milk + Bookies’ mission, another cornerstone of their program is Service Learning: instilling the seed of giving into each child participant, sparking feelings of importance, self-confidence and the desire to give and give again.
In over 10 years, Milk+Bookies, a program that was started by a stay at home mom, has grown from humble grassroots beginnings to a nationwide movement engaging over 76,000 children in giving back, resulting in over 285,000 books raised in more than 520 cities nationwide. As a Los Angeles based organization, where an average of 37% of the adult population is illiterate, they became acutely aware of the overwhelming need right in their own backyard and, thus, established their Leaders + Readers program. In the first 12 months of its operation, they have seen this program become a hugely successful force for change in Los Angeles education, rising to meet the needs of over 50,000 children by donating over 120,000 books to50+ Title 1 schools and in-need organizations. Due to overwhelming demand, they have also implemented their CHOOSE + KEEP Book Fair initiative where pop-up “shops” allow every child at a school or organization the opportunity to come and pick out books of their very own to take home to keep. In many cases, this may be the first book that they have ever owned.
By way of its national “book-raiser” programs and on-going local initiatives, Milk + Bookies has mobilized communities to leverage their own resources and together – Read! Give! and Grow!
